Welcome to my music vault!
Here you can find all of the albums I've listened to and my opinions on them. Don't take them as fact, they're opinions after all. If you love an album that I hate, I respect it — music would be boring if everyone liked the same stuff!! :3
My likes and dislikes
I like a lot of music genres, but my favorites lately have been Progressive Metal and Progressive Rock. I enjoy albums with a purpose or a story — concept albums. I also mainly like longer music, with most of my favorites being over 10 minutes long. My current favorite tracks are Close to the Edge by Yes and Crystallised
by Haken. The first is almost 19 minutes, the second's over.
I don't dislike any particular genre, however I dislike when music is created with no purpose or story, which rules out a lot of Pop songs. I also tend to dislike music with strong sexual or derogative language, which is common in genres like Hip-Hop. These are however only broad examples and I'm willing to explore any genre and any album.
How the ratings work
There are several categories:
- Sound Design — Does it sound good? Do amps/effects/etc add to the sound?
- Instrumentation — Does it feel complete? Does it go hard? (Riffs, hooks, etc)
- Pacing — Does it feel too long or too short? Does it progress in a satisfying way?
- Vocals† — Are the lyrics delivered well? Does the vocalist fit the music?
- Lyrics† — Are they written well? Are they meaningful, or otherwise interesting?
- Theming — Does the music have a theme, and if so, does it follow it well?
- Production — Is the mixing/mastering good? Does it sound fine on any speaker?
- Originality — Does the music feel like just any other song, or is it forgettable?
- Emotional Impact — Does the music make me feel something? Can I relate to it?
- Replay Value — Does the music get boring after the 5th, 10th, 50th relisten?
† Does not apply to instrumental songs, in which case the rating will not be counted into the total.
Again, these categories are only rated by me, even though I try to be as objective as I can.
Each category is rated from 0 to 20, making the total possible point amount 160 - 200. The rating is then divided into a rating from 0 to 5 stars (up to 2 decimals).
